Among his other positions, Dr. Marmar is Lucius N. Littauer Professor of Psychiatry, Director of the Center for the Study of Alcohol Use Disorder and Traumatic Stress & Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

In regards to his educational background, Dr. Marmar obtained his medical degree from the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Medicine in 1970. He then went on to perform his residency in psychiatry at the University of Toronto Affiliated Hospitals in 1976, his residency in psychiatry at the University of California – San Francisco in 1978, and his fellowship in psychiatry at the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute in 1978.

“My father was a general surgeon, and I was always very interested in his work. While participating in an elective in cardiothoracic surgery as a medical student, I interacted with many people who were facing life-threatening illnesses. This stimulated my interest in psychiatry, and specifically in traumatic stress” expressed Dr. Marmar.

A national expert in post-traumatic stress disorder, he is board-certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology.

Holding membership status with a number of professional organizations, Dr. Marmar is a member of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, the American Psychiatric Association, and the New York Academy of Medicine.

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. Psychiatrists evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, develop treatment plans, prescribe medication, and evaluate treatment results.

An award-winning teacher and researcher, Dr. Marmar is currently the principal investigator of numerous PTSD-related grants funded by the Department of Defense and private philanthropic organizations. He conducts studies in psychopharmacology, psychopathology, psychobiology, quality of care, psychotherapy treatment and phenomenology of PTSD. He has served as president of several international societies, has published extensively, and is on the editorial board of several publications.

He has served on multiple committees and scientific advisory groups at the national level for both the VA and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and as counsel to the VA Medical Centers, fire departments, disaster response teams and police departments, including the NYPD.
