Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Christine Funke, who serves patients throughout the State of Arizona.

Dr. Funke is a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist and glaucoma specialist who enjoys caring for a multitude of eye conditions including glaucoma, visually significant cataracts, diabetes, dry eye, and routine eye care. She is currently affiliated with the Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center, seeing patients in Mesa, Phoenix, and Chandler, Arizona.

Growing up in the western suburbs of Chicago, Dr. Funke studied Biology at the University of Notre Dame. After her undergraduate education, she earned her medical degree at Rush Medical College and completed her residency in Cleveland, Ohio at Case Western Reserve University. Finally, she completed her fellowship in glaucoma at the prestigious University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary, caring for patients with advanced, complex glaucoma for the duration of her training.

Following her training, the doctor attained board certification in ophthalmology through the American Board of Ophthalmology, an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.

Continuously advancing her efforts, she is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Glaucoma Society, the Women in Ophthalmology Society, the Chicago Women in Ophthalmology Group, and the Chicago Glaucoma Society. “Furthering my education and keeping current on surgical techniques is extremely important as a practicing physician. Being a member of these societies helps to ensure you are continuing to grow your armamentarium to treat eye disease” expressed Dr. Funke.

During her tenure at Case Western, she co-founded the University Eye Hospitals Alumni Association, was the representative to the Mid-Year Forum for the Women in Ophthalmology Society, spoke at numerous conferences and was active on a myriad of research projects and publications. She authored a chapter on alternative therapies for glaucoma treatment and has an interest in the effects of exercise and herbal therapy on eye pressure and vision.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. Ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and may perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.
