Retired Diabetes Educator Celebrates Over 50 Years of Impactful Service and Advocacy in Healthcare

Baldwin, Wisconsin – Christine Veenendall, BSN, RN, CDE, a distinguished retiree with over five decades of experience in diabetes education and healthcare, has dedicated her career to improving the lives of individuals living with diabetes. A proud graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Ms. Veenendall earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1975 and quickly established herself as a leader in the field of diabetes care.

Throughout her illustrious career, Ms. Veenendall served as a Registered Nurse, Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, and Certified Diabetes Educator, earning widespread recognition for her commitment and impact in the field. At Baldwin Area Medical Center, a part of Western Wisconsin Health, she held various positions, including registered nurse, discharge planner for cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, and obstetrics delivery nurse. However, it was her role as the founder and manager of the Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support Program from 1995 to 2024 that solidified her legacy. With a compassionate focus on empowering patients to regulate their blood sugar levels and embrace healthier lifestyles, Ms. Veenendall became a beacon of guidance and hope for countless individuals navigating the challenges of diabetes.

In addition to her extensive clinical experience, Ms. Veenendall has been an active participant in local health initiatives. She has organized educational workshops, fundraisers for patient transportation to expos, and collaborated with leading endocrinologists to implement technological advancements in diabetes management, including meters, sensors, and pumps. Her commitment to patient education extends beyond the clinic, reflecting her belief in the importance of community support for those with diabetes.

Ms. Veenendall’s involvement in professional organizations has further enhanced her impact on the field. As a longtime member of the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists, West Central Wisconsin, she has served in various leadership roles, including president, treasurer, and membership coordinator. Her passion for service transcends her professional responsibilities; Ms. Veenendall volunteers at The Free Clinic of Pierce & St. Croix Counties in River Falls, Wisconsin, providing care for underserved populations, including many Hispanic patients. She believes that listening to her patients and fostering a love of learning have been critical to her success as a healthcare provider.
