Specializing in trauma and surgical critical care, Dr. Crane is a general surgeon at University Hospital in San Antonio – one of the nation’s leading teaching hospitals and South Texas’ premier Level I trauma center.

As for his academic appointment, he serves as an Assistant Professor within the Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma and Emergency Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio Joe and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine.

Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Dr. Crane attended Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas where he was an all American swimmer, and he earned his Bachelor of Science degree with a dual major in Biology and Chemistry in 2002. After college, he lived and worked in Little Rock, Arkansas where he did multiple myeloma research at the Myeloma Institute for Research Therapy. He continued his education at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences where he received his Master of Science degree in Anatomy and Neurodevelopmental Sciences. 

Subsequently, Dr. Crane attended medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine and earned his medical degree in 2010. He remained at UAMS where he completed his residency in general surgery in June of 2015. He then moved to San Antonio, Texas and completed the clinical fellowship in surgical critical care at the University of Texas Health Science Center in June of 2016.

Licensed to practice medicine in Texas, the doctor is board-certified in general surgery & surgical critical care by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and other body systems. A general surgeon performs a wide range of surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and biliary disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care.
