Dr. Carrol graduated with his Medical Degree from the SUNY School of Medicine – University At Buffalo in 1987, giving him over three decades of experience in his field. After obtaining his Medical Degree he completed his internal medicine internship with the Mount Sinai Medical Center of Florida, followed by his internal medicine residency with Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. He also served as chief medical resident at Beth Israel where he was instrumental in obtaining a 100 percent pass rate for Internal Medicine Board examination through innovative teaching methods. Wanting to further his training, he completed his Gastroenterology fellowship with the SUNY Stony Brook University Hospital & Medical Center.
Dr. Carrol is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine specializing in gastroenterology. To stay up to date in his field, he is a fellow of three professional organizations, which is a rare distinction:The American College of Gastroenterology, the American College of Physicians, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Dr. Carrol currently practices with the Great West Medical Associates. He is also affiliated with the Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center, Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center, St. Rose Dominican Hospitals – San Martin Campus Campus, and the Mountain View Hospital. At Mountainview Hospital, he is the section chief of gastroenterology, teaches medical and surgical residents, and teaches medical students from Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Gastroenterology is the study of the normal function and diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver. It involves a detailed understanding of the normal action (physiology) of the gastrointestinal organs including the movement of material through the stomach and intestine (motility), the digestion and absorption of nutrients into the body, removal of waste from the system, and the function of the liver as a digestive organ. It includes common and important conditions such as colon polyps and cancer, hepatitis, gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn), peptic ulcer disease, colitis, gallbladder and biliary tract disease, nutritional problems, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and pancreatitis. In essence, all normal activity and disease of the digestive organs are part of the study of Gastroenterology.
