Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Courtney E. Sherman, who serves patients in Jacksonville, Florida.

Dr. Sherman, a remarkable board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, is an Assistant Professor and Consultant in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. 

Specializing in orthopaedic oncology and adult reconstruction, she has special interests in hip and knee replacements, hip and knee revisions, and avascular necrosis of the hip, bone, and soft tissue tumors. She treats disorders of the arthritic hip and knee, complex arthroplasty, tumors of the arms, legs and pelvis including: hip and knee replacements including direct anterior total hip arthroplasty, total knee arthroplasty including robotic procedures and partial knee arthroplasty, bone and soft tissue tumor resections and complex reconstructions, hip decompression with or without stem cells for avascular necrosis, and complex revision total hip and total knee arthroplasty.

An advocate for women in orthopaedic surgery, Dr. Sherman is a member of the Ruth Jackson society, mentors residents and fellows in orthopaedic surgery, as well as leads an annual Perry Initiative event at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville to encourage young women to consider orthopaedic surgery or engineering as a career. 

For the purpose of staying up to date in her field, she remains a member of multiple professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, the International Musculoskeletal Society, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Mid-America Orthopaedic Association, the Ohio State Medical Association, the Gold Humanism Honor Society, and the Golden Key International Honour Society.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Akron, Dr. Sherman went on to obtain her medical degree, graduating the Glasgow-Rubin Citation of Academic Achievement, from Northeast Ohio Medical University. From there, she went on to complete her residency in orthopaedic surgery and her fellowship in orthopaedic oncology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. 

In addition to holding certificates in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support and Basic Life Support, the doctor is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons, as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons. 

Orthopaedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders. They work in clinical and hospital settings.

Attributing her success to her father, Dr. Sherman has been honored with multiple awards and recognitions throughout her extensive career, including Rookie Surgeon of the Year from Mayo Clinic (2013), Best Orthopaedic Oncology Clinical Podium Presentation from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (2012), Glasgow-Rubin Citation for Academic Achievement from the American Medical Women’s Association (2006), Meritorious Service Award Sponsored by McGraw-Hill/Lange (2006), Award of Appreciation from the American Medical Association’s Medical Student Membership Outreach Program (2003), and Recognition of Outstanding Service from the Peer Mentor Advising Program at Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine (2003). She has also authored many scientific publications, contributed authorship to multiple books, and has served on the Mayo Clinic Hospital Practice Sub-committee and Mayo Clinic Surgical Quality Sub-committee.

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Sherman enjoys spending time with her husband and children, traveling, and swimming. She is an Ohio State and Brown’s fan.
