Lieutenant Colonel Myatt retired from the United States Army and is a Collaborative Assistant Professor of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida.
Prior to his current endeavors, he worked in the Consortium for Health and Military Performance as an Assistant Professor of Military and Emergency Medicine, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology, at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland.
As a health psychologist, his interests include resilience, human performance optimization, total force fitness program development, biopsychosocial applications, consulting psychology, and strategic leadership.
Educated in the United States, Dr. Myatt graduated with his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Pomona College and his Master of Arts degree in Research Psychology from San Francisco State University. He then went on to earn his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Health Psychology from Walden University after completing his doctoral dissertation research as a pre-doctoral fellow in the Department of Neuro-Oncology, Division of Medicine, at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
He served in the military as a U.S. Army Research Psychologist. He distinguished himself by earning skill identifiers in Army Medical Department Special Operations and in Medical Acquisitions, Air Assault Operations, and Resilience Training. He earned instructor certification at the National Defense University (NDU) as an Assistant Professor for Joint Professional Military Education.
In addition, Dr. Myatt is credentialed as an instructor through both the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command and the Army Medical Department Center and School Health Readiness Center of Excellence. He taught courses on “Stress and Fatigue” at the School of Army Aviation Medicine.
Before that, he served as a RAND Fellow. He holds the distinction of selection and service as the first Command Psychologist at the United States Special Operations Command and at NDU. At USSOCOM, Dr. Myatt gained authorization for approval and funding of the Special Operations Forces Resilience Enterprise Program, a contributing forerunner, along with the SOF Human Performance Program, of the current Preservation of the Force and Families (POTFF) program. His work in resilience program development, research, and education is outlined in numerous published articles and has been presented at several local and national conferences.
Holding many titles, Dr. Myatt previously served as a platoon leader, company commander, and battalion commander. He has over 30 years of military tactical, operational, and strategic experience combined with civilian medical neuroscience research experiences using immunohistochemical staining techniques in the Brain Tumor Research Center at the University of California San Francisco, animal behavioral studies at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, brain tissue electron microscopy techniques in the Department of Pathology at George Washington University School of Medicine, and MRI/PET neuroimaging techniques in the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the National Institutes of Health.
Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Myatt is a sought-after subject matter expert in strategic leadership approaches supporting organizational and human performance, such as diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) program development and project management. At USU, he used his expertise in consulting psychology as President of the Faculty Senate and Faculty Assembly representing over 6,842 local and national faculty. In that role, he provided direct consultation to the University President and Deans who collectively lead and manage a $700,000,000 research and academic medical enterprise. His consulting approaches incorporated comprehensive DEI strategies supporting university accreditation review.
During the past decade, Dr. Myatt used his expertise in consulting psychology to lead, manage, and train over 3,500 officers and enlisted personnel in the Military Health System. His work in health psychology is applied in diverse domains. His applications are both multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary. He commonly employs a scientific, evidence-based, systems approach compatible with innovative business modeling.
