Dr. Langman, a seasoned pediatric nephrologist and can be found on staff at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

His areas of clinical focus include rare genetic kidney diseases, osteoporosis in children, inherited and acquired bone disease in children, disorders of calcification, disorders of phosphorus metabolism, and chronic kidney diseases of childhood.

Holding academic appointments, Dr. Langman is the first Isaac A. Abt, MD, Professor of Kidney Diseases, Emeritus and Tenured Professor of Pediatrics at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University.

His funded research focuses on the basic and clinical expression of inherited or acquired disorders of calcium, phosphorus vitamin D, and FGF23 metabolism, mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases in children with obesity or chronic kidney disease, pediatric hypertension, inherited genetic diseases (cystinosis, oxalosis, kidney stones, atypical HUS, hypophosphatasia), and the rehabilitation of patients around the world with chronic kidney disease. 

Educated in the United States, Dr. Langman graduated with his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in 1977. He then went on to perform his residency in pediatrics and his fellowship in pediatric nephrology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 1979 and 1981, respectively. 

With extensive knowledge on the dialysis and transplant processes, the doctor is board-certified in both pediatrics and pediatric nephrology by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The ABP is an independent and nonprofit organization that was founded in 1933. It is one of the 24 certifying boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties. 

Pediatric nephrology involves the diagnosis and treatment of patients with kidney and urinary tract diseases. Pediatric nephrologists diagnose, treat, and manage many disorders affecting the kidney and urinary tract, including kidney failure, high blood pressure, inherited kidney diseases, kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and abnormalities in the urine such as blood and protein. 

A world-renowned researcher and clinician, Dr. Langman has published more than 280 articles, reviews, and chapters in his discipline.

His external professional leadership and service includes: Co-Chair of the Kidney Health Initiative Workgroup for Enteric Hyperoxaluria (2019 – Present); member of the Scholarly Oversight Committee for two nephrology fellows, Vidhi Dalal an Annosh Moin (2019 – Present); Co-Chair of the Hyperoxaluria Advisory Group to FDA, Kidney Health Initiative (2018 – Present); on the Scientific Council of the Rare Bone Disease Alliance (2016 – Present); Panel member and small group leader of common elements of rare kidney diseases, KDIGO (2016 – Present); member of AAP and NKF (2011 – Present); member of the Medicare Clinical Advisory Committee (2004 – Present); and member of the International Conference for Children’s Bone Health (1999 – Present).

Professionally, Dr. Langman is an editorial board member of the European Journal of Pediatrics and the National Osteoporosis Foundation Editorial Board. He is also editor of the Current Osteoporosis Reports, Rare Bone Diseases Section; editor of the Pediatric Nephrology textbook, www.Emedicine.com; section editor, Inherited, Tubular, Metabolic Dis. of the International Pediatric Nephrology Association-Pediatric Nephrology Journal; and scientific advisory board member of the Cystinosis Research Network.

Among his various awards and honors include being a previous Director, Area of Scholar Concentration, Feinberg School of Medicine (2019); Visiting Professor Award at annual Miami Paediatric Nephrology Symposium, Miller School of Medicine, (2019); and Leighton Hill Endowed Lectureship at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children’s Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine, and Texas Children’s Hospital (2019).
