Crystal Nevins, FNP-BC, a Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner with Suffolk Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing

Get to know Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner Crystal Nevins, who serves patients in Patchogue, New York.

Crystal is a board-certified family nurse practitioner whose experience runs the full gamut from home health care to pediatrics, long-term care, and rehabilitation, and health care management.

In addition to serving community patients, she is the highly regarded Director of Nursing Services at Suffolk Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Patchogue, New York. About this part of her work life:

“Suffolk Center has a dedicated team of caring professionals. It is our obligation and duty to provide safe, effective, and quality care to each resident who enters our facility. We foster a very caring environment not only to the resident but to their family as well. My goal is to help make this Center a magnificent facility where every patient wants to go. We make a lasting impression for our residents and their families. We have many patients who, after being discharged, have setbacks and need rehab again; they only want to return to Suffolk Center. We will continue to strive to be the best facility.”

Born and raised in Patchogue, she completed a practical nursing program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES in 2002. She then went on to earn her Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Suffolk Community College in 2008, followed by her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Grand Canyon University with honor in 2017. Continuing to pursue her nursing education, she graduated from Long Island University in May of 2020 with High Honors with a Master of Science in Nursing degree.

Her Suffolk Center responsibility is dear to her heart. Her own mother retired from her nursing career at the facility after 20+ years. Crystal started her career at Suffolk Center in 2000 as a recreation aide. During that time, she was enrolled in school to follow her dreams to become a nurse. She worked at the facility as a nursing aide for a short time while she was waiting to take her LPN certification exam. Starting in March of 2003, she broadened her horizons and experience in a number of other well regarded facilities. In January of 2019, she returned to the Suffolk Center as the Director of Nursing.

With over two decades of experience, Crystal has cared for critically ill patients and children on ventilators. She is motivated at the start of each day by her desire to change the lives of others by making them feel better and keeping them healthy. She strives to make a difference in the lives of her patients by recommending and ordering the correct medications and treatments, as well as establishing a good rapport with each patient she encounters.  Her vocation and avocation is medical and nursing care.

Holding certifications in Basic Life Support and IV Therapy, she is a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She is also the recipient of the Poly Moran Scholarship (2001) and the Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Scholarship (2001) and volunteered at Northport Veterans Home (1995-1998).

Attributing her success to having a solid foundation with goals, dreams, and motivation, Crystal has been determined and focused to become a nurse practitioner since she was a little girl. She was inspired by her mother, who worked in the nursing field for 25+ years to pursue a career in nursing. She has observed the good the bad and the ugly in patient care and this imbued her with a passion to join the field in order to be able to treat others with compassion and kindness. She pictures a patient as if they were her own family member and treats them with concern and care.

A Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC) is an advanced practice registered nurse who holds board certification and works autonomously or in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, to deliver family-focused care. Given the rather broad nature of the “family” patient population focus, FNPs offer a wide range of healthcare services that revolve around the family unit; from health promotion and disease prevention to direct care and counseling across the lifespan.

On a more personal note, Crystal has a beautiful family. Her hobbies include participating in water sports, touring scenic and recreational parts of the country, baking, family vacations, and shopping. Her favorite place to vacation is in the tropics
