Cynthia M. Magro, MD, a Pathologist with Weill Cornell Medicine

Get to know Pathologist Dr. Cynthia M. Magro, who serves patients in New York, New York.

One of New York’s premier pathologists, Dr. Magro is affiliated with Weill Cornell Medicine, serving as a Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Director of the Comprehensive Dermatopathology Service at Weill Cornell Medical College. Her expertise has focused on the pathologic assessment of cutaneous autoimmune disease, viral disease, immunofluorescence, drug reactions, benign, atypical neoplastic lymphocytic infiltrates of the skin and problematic melanocytic proliferations.

“I believe in offering the most detailed and accurate analysis of a pathological  specimen. My  objective is to render a diagnosis that is the most reasonable for the clinical circumstances at hand and do so as expeditiously as possible. My diagnostic work also defines the impetus for my role as an academician. If I can glean an enhanced understanding into the pathophysiologic basis of a disease process or recognize patterns that will facilitate others to diagnose similar diseases, I feel compelled to communicate this information to others either in the context of my writings or through my mentoring of students, residents and fellows” expressed the doctor.

Before embarking on her professional journey, she graduated with her medical degree from the University of Manitoba in Canada in 1984, and completed her internship and residency in anatomic & clinical pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1988. In order to further her training, she completed two consecutive fellowships in cytopathology and dermatology at the same educational venue in 1989 and 1991, respectively.

As a testament of her continued education, the doctor is board-certified in anatomic & clinical pathology, cytopathology, and dermatopathology by the American Board of Pathology (ABPath). The mission of the ABPath is to promote the health of the public and advance the practice and science of pathology by establishing voluntary certification standards and assessing the qualifications of those seeking to practice the specialty of pathology.

On a professional level, Dr. Magro is an active member of the American Society of Dermatopathology, and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathologists. Internationally known in dermatopathology, she has co-authored over 350 papers, several book chapters and three textbooks – the Melanocytic Proliferation, the Cutaneous Lymphoid proliferation, and Cutaneous Biopsy Interpretation – and is an co-editor on the Barnhill Textbook of Dermatopathology.

In addition, she has expertise in the area of non-neoplastic lung disease, where she has functioned as the senior author on several papers in the areas of pulmonary vasculitis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and lung transplantation. She has also developed a novel approach to the evaluation of non-neoplastic inflammatory lung disease via direct immunofluorescent techniques, which has been published in the new 2008 book Pulmonary Pathology (Churchill Livingstone).

Pathology is a branch of medicine that involves the study and diagnosis of diseases through direct gross and microscopic tissue analyses (e.g. of biopsies). Pathologists also analyze various body fluids (e.g. blood) and whole bodies (autopsies). Pathologists are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis of diseases using laboratory methods.
