Get to know Surgical Oncologist Dr. David Caba Molina, who serves patients in California.

A dual board-certified surgical oncologist, Dr. Molina focuses on advanced surgical oncology, multidisciplinary care of the cancer patient, high-quality research in the surgical management of disease, and quality improvement of healthcare delivery. He also trains on minimally invasive techniques of gastrointestinal cancers (pancreas, liver, stomach, and colorectal cancers), melanoma, breast cancer, sarcoma, and stromal tumors, as well as thyroid and parathyroid cancers.

A man of many titles, he is the Associate Program Director at Loma Linda University Health, an Assistant Professor of Surgery within the Surgical Oncology Division at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, and an attending at both Loma Linda University Cancer Center and Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.

Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Molina graduated with his medical degree from Anahuac University School of Medicine in Mexico. He then received his Master of Public Health degree from the Graduate School of Public Health of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Furthering his training, he completed his internship and residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He then went on to complete his fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of Chicago Hospitals, and his fellowship in laparoscopic and robotic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.

As a testament to his continued education, the doctor is board-certified in general surgery and complex general surgical oncology by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

To stay at the forefront of a challenging specialty, Dr. Molina maintains professional memberships with the American College of Surgeons, the Surgical Oncology Society, the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.

Surgical oncology is the branch of surgery applied to oncology; it focuses on the surgical management of tumors, especially cancerous tumors. Surgical oncologists are general surgeons with specialty training in procedures for diagnosing, staging (determining the stage of cancer) or removing cancerous growths. The most common procedures performed by surgical oncologists are biopsies and surgery for cancerous growth removal.

Speaking around the world on his expertise, Dr. Molina attributes his success to perseverance and focus on individualized treatment based on shared decision-making. 

An Ironman Triathlon athlete, he also enjoys classical music, photography, and meditation. His favorite professional publications include the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, the American Journal of Surgery, the New England Journal of Medicine, the Surgical Oncology Society Journal, and the American Journal of Cancer Research.
