David Hoffman, DDS, an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with Staten Island Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Get to know Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Dr. David Hoffman, who serves patients in Staten Island, New York.

Dr. Hoffman has been in practice since 1981, after completing his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center, Parkland Memorial Hospital, and Southwest Medical School in Dallas, Texas. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and also completed a two-year NIH fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Medical School. He completed his dental school education at NYU School of Dentistry.

Following his residency, he joined the staff of Staten Island University Hospital, where he serves as director of the division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He has been on the faculty of numerous hospitals and educational institutions including Columbia University, Downstate Medical Center, and University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Rutgers Health Science Center).

Dr. Hoffman is a Fellow of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, American College of Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Additionally, he was granted a fellowship in the American College of Surgeons, a distinction to a small percentage of oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

Dr. Hoffman is a member of the American Cleft Lip and Palate Association, the American Society of TMJ Surgeons, American Dental Association, and the Academy of Osseointegration. He has presented at both national and international meetings on a variety of topics including orthognathic surgery, TM joint surgery, dental implant surgery, and cleft lip and palate surgery. Additionally, he has multiple publications as well as several chapters in major textbooks on oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Dr. Hoffman has an active interest in treating children with cleft lip and palate deformities. He has been the medical director for Healing the Children and has been involved in over 75 trips to third-world countries with Healing the Children and other international health organizations. He also has an active interest in temporomandibular joint surgery and patented a temporomandibular joint prosthesis with Dr. Michael Pappas known as the Hoffman-Pappas joint, which has been used worldwide. 

Dr. Hoffman has been involved with dental implants since their inception and currently focuses his practice on implant dentistry. He has pioneered the use of virtual planning for implant dentistry as well as introduced with Dr. Lam, to Staten Island, “Teeth in a Day “ using the “All-on-4” system for dental implants. This technique has helped numerous patients benefit by having their teeth extracted, implants placed, and new teeth placed all in one day.

Dr. Hoffman has received multiple awards and distinctions during his career. In 2018, he received the prestigious Humanitarian Award by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, for recognition of his volunteer health service. Amongst his many awards, the ones he most values are those received from his peers and the community in Staten Island, where he works. Below is a list of community awards:

May 2010 – Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Gardens “Humanitarian Award” 

April 2012 – Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame “Unsung Hero Award” for making life on Staten Island better

April 2017 – The Friends of Maya Chang Foundation “Award for Excellence in Pediatric Care”

May 2018 – Healing the Children “Dr. Wes Allen Award” for 25 years of service in Neiva, Colombia

December 2019 – The Global Medical Relief Fund Annual Dinner Honoree 

Dr. Hoffman and his colleagues, including Dr. Lam, have appeared in both local and national news for their charitable work bringing children back to this country for facial reconstructive surgery. He was featured on the Discovery Channel series entitled “Super Surgeons” for the work he did with two children he brought back to Staten Island for treatment of TMJ ankylosis, or frozen jaw joint. Most recently, he and Dr. Lam were featured on the national news for their treatment of a 14-year-old girl from Gambia who had a large life-threatening facial tumor, and for a 16-year-old boy who could not open his mouth. 

Dr. Hoffman is accompanied in his practice by two of his previous residents, Dr. Lam and Dr. Yusopov. Together, they have put together one of the most technically advanced practices for the treatment of patients who require implant dentistry. They have contributed to Staten Island one of the more sophisticated implant dental programs incorporating the latest in digital imaging, dental scanning, and 3D printing as well as virtual surgery planning for optimal patient care. Drs. Hoffman, Lam, and Yusupov are proud of the fact that they have developed one of the major and most advanced oral and maxillofacial surgery practices in the New York Metropolitan area located on the campus of Staten Island University Hospital.
