David P. Bica, DO, a Family Physician & Sports Medicine Physician with University Orthopedics

Dr. Bica is a highly respected and experienced family physician with a certificate of added qualification in sports medicine. He specializes in primary care sports medicine, focusing on both medical illness and injury.

He joined University Orthopedics as an attending at Newport Hospital after practicing three years with East Greenwich Spine and Sport. His interests include sports medicine research, osteopathic manipulative medicine in treatment of neck and lower back pain, fluoroscopy spinal injections, as well as diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound.

University Orthopedics in Providence, Rhode Island, is a regional referral center for patients with back and neck pain, joint pain, sports medicine problems, shoulder pain, hand problems, hip and knee pain, as well as foot and ankle injury. A native Rhode Islander, he graduated from Providence College, and then went on to earn his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Wanting to further his training, he completed his residency in family medicine and his fellowship in sports medicine at East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine in Greenville, North Carolina. Thereafter, he stayed on faculty as Assistant Residency Director,  teaching residents and medical students. 

Among the doctor’s professional affiliations, he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Secretary of the Rhode Island Society of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, as well as the President and Education Committee Chairman of the Rhode Island Academy of Family Physicians. 

Furthermore, Dr. Bica is board-certified in both family medicine and sports medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine, a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice in family medicine and its sub-specialties.
