Dr. Duffey is an accomplished physician executive with a wealth of expertise in fostering healing environments within healthcare systems, facilitating alignment among clinicians, and optimizing care delivery across the continuum through collaboration, continuous learning, and mutual respect within complex systems. Since July of 2020, Dr. Duffey has held the position of Vice President for Women’s and Children’s Service Line at OSF HealthCare in Peoria, Illinois.

In partnership with system and regional leadership, he is dedicated to enhancing and unifying healthcare services for women and children throughout the organization. His efforts involve aligning and expanding services, minimizing unwarranted disparities, as well as investigating, crafting, and implementing care model innovations that enhance safety, quality, and service excellence.

His role encompasses: spearheading the creation and execution of clinical care guidelines; discovering novel care models and avenues for enhancing care delivery, working collaboratively with stakeholders to promote adoption; collaborating with operational leaders to formulate innovative services and tackle workforce requirements, encompassing recruitment and clinician onboarding; collaborating with regional and executive leadership to craft strategic plans; and establishing connections between organizational primary and specialty services and both employed and independent clinicians across service areas.

After finishing his Bachelor of Arts Degree at Kalamazoo College in 1985, Dr. Duffey obtained his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1990. He then went on to perform his internship and residency in pediatrics at Michigan State University / EW Sparrow Hospital in 1991 and 1994, respectively. 

Throughout his career, Dr. Duffey underwent a series of additional training programs to further enhance his expertise. These programs included the MGMA Practice Management Course at Northwestern University, the Health Care Delivery Improvement Advanced Training Program at Intermountain Health, and the Patient Safety Certificate Program at the 10th Annual National Quality Colloquium, among others. He also delved into courses related to leadership and communication, such as the Foundations of Conversational Leadership through INVITAS and the CMIO Directors Boot Camp offered by the American Medical Informatics Association. Dr. Duffey further enriched his leadership skills with AAPL Physician Leadership Courses provided by the American Association of Physician Leaders and completed Crucial Conversations/Confrontations training with Spectrum Health. His commitment to continuous learning led him to the Physician Leadership Course at PeaceHealth and Lean Green Belt Training, also at PeaceHealth.

Board certified in pediatrics, Dr. Duffey is a Diplomate of the American Osteopathic Board of Pediatrics (AOBP). The AOBP is an organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of medical diseases in infants, children, and adolescents.

Having held several key roles in the healthcare field over the past 25 years, Dr. Duffey served as the Medical Director of Specialty Services in Bloomington, Illinois from April 2019 to July 2020, collaborating with various stakeholders to establish new specialty services, recruit clinicians, enhance clinician productivity, implement hospitalist bedside IDR’s, and ensure stable clinical coverage.

Prior to that, he served as the Vice President/Medical Director at PeaceHealth Medical Group in Oregon Network from November 2015 to October 2018; Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at MetroHealth in Wyoming, Michigan from July 2012 to October 2014; Chair and Medical Director of Quality, Safety, and Clinical Innovation at Spectrum Health Medical Group from August 2010 to July 2012; Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Human Development at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine from 2008 to July 2012; Division Chief of Pediatric Hospitalists at Helen Devos Children’s Hospital from August 2004 to July 2012; Director of Informatics at Helen Devos Children’s Hospital from June 2009 – January 2011; Medical Director of Principal Health PHO from August 2000 – July 2004; and as a pediatrician at Holland Pediatric Associates from February 1994 to September 2001. 

Distinguished with fellowship status, Dr. Duffey holds fellowships in the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians. Additionally, he is a member of the American Osteopathic Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, Illinois Chapter, while also possessing expertise in healthcare delivery improvement and certification in patient safety.

Given his background, Dr. Duffey’s primary focus remains on delivering obstetric and pediatric services, addressing the surge in pediatric respiratory illnesses, and bolstering women’s health services. His unwavering commitment lies in ensuring equitable access to high-quality care for rural communities, where health disparities are more prevalent.

Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that involves the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends individuals be under pediatric care up to the age of 21. Pediatricians provide medical care to people ranging in age from newborns to young adults. They are trained to examine, diagnose, and treat children with a wide variety of injuries and illnesses through all of their developmental stages, as they grow and mature.

Having been actively engaged in various presentations and publications across a spectrum of healthcare topics, Dr. Duffey has had the privilege of contributing to events such as the Sunrise Pediatric Collaborative Update, the Metro Heart and Vascular Winter Update, and the AMP-Amputation Prevention Symposium. His commitment to leadership development and education has led him to participate in programs like the Metro Health Leadership Development Institute and engagements with the Northeastern Michigan Osteopathic Association. 

Additionally, he has made valuable contributions to forums such as the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians Annual Spring Poster Presentation, the National Business Coalition on Health with a focus on data-driven clinician improvement, and the Michigan Society of Healthcare Risk Management. Furthermore, he has delivered numerous educational lectures and authored various newsletter articles, reflecting his dedication to disseminating knowledge and insights within the healthcare field.

Among his most notable achievements, Dr. Duffey has been honored with the prestigious Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who’s Who, the Community Service Award from the Holland Community Hospital Foundation, and the Outstanding First Year Resident Award from MSU/EW Sparrow Hospital. He was also recognized twice as the Outstanding General Educator of the Year by the Grand Rapids MERC House Staff.

These accolades, along with the Family Practice Award from Des Moines University, underscore his dedication to both medical education and community service.

Civically, Dr. Duffey has served on the Board of Ele’s Place, a nonprofit organization that assists children to heal from the loss of a family member. During an earlier stage of his career, he was involved with Christian Hands in Action in El Paso, Texas, and was a youth counselor for the West Des Moines United Methodist Church.

Happily married, he and his wife, Sandra Rose, reside in Normal, Illinois.
