The ASN program is one of the premier programs within the School of Nursing and Health Sciences at the College of Coastal Georgia. The purpose of the ASN program is to prepare graduates who can successfully enter the practice of professional nursing.

As a certified nurse educator, Dawana loves being able to shape the next generation of nurses and to share all of the gifts and tools she has been given throughout her career. Her primary areas of teaching are fundamentals and mental health.

Pertaining to her clinical expertise, she is experienced in adult psychiatric mental health nursing, both in acute care and in the community. Having always had an interest in mental health, she quickly realized that with nursing, she could make a huge impact by getting to provide bedside care and to improve patient interaction, as well as to take part in other aspects of mental health. She likes the fact that she is able to maintain an interactive approach to care and take part in each patient’s journey.

In 1984, Dawana obtained her ASN degree from Brunswick Jr. College. Thereafter, she went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from Armstrong State College (now Georgia Southern University Armstrong Campus) in 1991, followed by her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree from Georgia Southern University in 1995.

In order to stay up to date in her field, she remains a member of the American Nurses Association, the Georgia Nurses Association, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Additionally, she has received several awards throughout her career, including Albert Crews Service Award, Advisor of the Year Award, and Outstanding Faculty Member in Service Learning.
