Get to know Neurosurgeon Dr. Donald E. Richardson, who serves patients throughout the State of Louisiana.
A seasoned neurosurgeon, Dr. Richardson is affiliated with Southern Pain and Neurological, serving patients in the Marrero, Metairie, and Covington areas. His clinical interests include functional and stereotactic neurosurgery and pain management. He is a pioneer in the field of brain stimulation for the treatment of chronic pain.
The Southern Pain and Neurological team coordinates pain treatment plans that are individually designed for each of their patients. They address all sides of the pain – physical, mental, and emotional. Using this approach patients develop a trusting and optimistic attitude toward the possibility of success. They strive to find the source of the pain to construct the best treatment plan for each individual patient. Their mission is to provide optimal pain reduction or relief utilizing state-of-the-art healthcare resulting in an improved quality of life.
Back in the early days of his academic career, Dr. Richardson received his medical degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine, before completing his residency in neurological surgery at the same educational venue. He remained at Tulane as a Professor for the School of Medicine until he started a private neurosurgical practice. He later was a Clinical Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at the LSU School of Medicine and served as the Director of the Hotel Dieu Hospital Pain Treatment Center.
Upon the close of the pain center, he returned to Tulane as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery. He was the Program Director of the Tulane Neurosurgery Residency training program until 2010, before joining the team of providers at Southern Pain and Neurological.
Passionate about his profession, the doctor is board-certified in neurological surgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, whose broad aim is to encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards, and advance the science of neurological surgery and thereby serve the cause of public health.
Achieving fellowship status, Dr. Richardson is a Fellow of both the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (FAANS), and the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
In order to stay up to date in his field, he is an active member of several professional societies, including the American Pain Society, the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery and the World Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, the Association for Academic Surgery, the International Association for the Study of Pain, the International Neurosurgical Society, the Research Society of Neurological Surgeons, the Royal Society of Medicine in London, and the European Society for Functional Neurosurgery.
Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Neurosurgeons are doctors who diagnose and treat problems with the nervous system, often by performing surgery on the brain or spine. They treat strokes, tumors, certain types of birth defects, infections, and head or spinal cord injuries.
Among his most notable achievements, Dr. Richardson has been the recipient of the Patients’ Choice Award in 2015.
