Dori Lyman, RN, a Registered Nurse with Quinte Detention Centre and Lennox & Addington County General Hospital

Get to know Registered Nurse, Dori Lyman, who serves patients in Napanee, Ontario, Canada.

Dori is a registered nurse who provides her services at Quinte Detention Centre, and in the intensive care unit within Lennox & Addington County General Hospital – both of which are located in Napanee, Ontario, Canada.

When asked why she chose a career in nursing, Dori answered that she knew she wanted to do something where she was going to be helping people, but she just wasn’t sure what that was going to be. She had thought about being a teacher, dental hygienist, etc.; however, those options also weren’t going to guarantee her a job/career once she graduated. It wasn’t until she saw a close family member in the hospital and the way the nurses interacted with him and her family that she realized she wanted to become a nurse.

In 2015, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Laurentian University in Sudbury, Canada, via the St. Lawrence College and Laurentian University Collaborative Degree Program. Upon graduation, Dori worked at a long-term care home with 60 beds. She loved the home-y feeling of the nursing home and was sad when she decided to leave her post for a full-time position at Kingston General Hospital (KGH). She worked in the area of general medicine at KGH, where she learned a ton of essential skills to help her to become a successful nurse. She worked there for 2 years before she switched to a smaller general medicine floor at KGH, but came to miss the bigger, crazier medicine floor and moved back there after a year.

Dori worked at KGH until she went on maternity leave in December of 2018. While on maternity leave, she decided that she wanted to be closer to home for work and applied for positions at Quinte Detention Centre and Lennox & Addington County General Hospital, where she is currently employed.

Attributing her success to having had amazing role models in her life and people who encouraged her to achieve her goals, Dori strives to make a difference in the lives of her patients by being who they need her to be. She can be the tough nurse who pushes them, the empathetic nurse, or the voice of reason and truth. She can also adapt to all different situations, remaining level-headed and calm when things begin to escalate. Most importantly, she believes that the key to being successful is taking it one day at a time.

With an interest and palliative care and correctional nursing, as well as a love for general medicine, she holds certifications in palliative care, dementia care, multiple sclerosis care, and coronary care. She is also certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Basic Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and telemetry.

In order to stay up to date in her field, Dori remains a member of several professional organizations, including the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario, the Canadian Nurses Association, the International Nurses Association, and the College of Nurses of Ontario.

A registered nurse (RN) is a nurse who has graduated from a nursing program and met the requirements outlined by a country, state, province or similar licensing body to obtain a nursing license. Other RN job functions include leadership, research, performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results, operating medical equipment, administering medications, recording patients’ symptoms and medical histories, and assisting with patient rehabilitation and follow-up.

Born in rural Ontario and happily married, Dori enjoys playing hockey, reading, as well as spending time on the farm with her family and friends when she is not working.
