Dr. Antoine Lyonel Carré, a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with City of Hope

Get to know Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Dr. Antoine Lyonel Carré, who serves patients throughout the State of California.

Dr. Carré is a plastic and reconstructive surgery specializing in such areas as breast surgery, chest wall reconstruction, microsurgery, lymphedema, abdominal wall reconstruction, perineal reconstruction, targeted muscle reinnervation for chronic/phantom pain, and melanoma.

Within City of Hope, he serves at three locations: Duarte – Main Campus, South Bay (Torrance), and South Pasadena. His patient-centered approach emphasizes active listening to patients and their families, reflecting his empathy for those seeking his guidance during challenging moments in their lives.

Studiously, Dr. Carré received medical training at University of California San Francisco (UCSF), and completed a Master’s Degree in Public Health at the University of California Berkeley. He pursued residencies in general surgery at Stanford and at Harvard. He also served as a postdoctoral researcher at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, UCSF, and Stanford. 

As a resident and fellow at the University of Southern California, he specialized in plastic surgery and microsurgery.

From 2019 to 2021, Dr. Carré served as a member of the Regional Surgical Wound Care Committee at the Southern California Permanente Medical Group. During the same period, he held the role of Clinical Strategic Goals Physician Champion in the Plastic Surgery Department at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center. Additionally, in 2020 and 2021, he took on the role of a faculty member in the Professionalism Committee within the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. During this time, he also served as the Co-Chair for the Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Faculty within the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Southern California

Viewing his career in medicine as marrying his passion for science with his duty to his fellow human beings, Dr. Carré is a Diplomate of both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery.

His areas of research include breast reconstruction after mastectomy or lumpectomy, outcome of lymphedema surgery, and pathophysiology of wound care and wound healing.

Since 2021, Dr. Carré has been serving as an Assistant Clinical Professor within the Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery at City of Hope.

Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty involving the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. It can be divided into two main categories – reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. A plastic surgeon’s primary responsibility is performing surgical and non-surgical procedures, and they use a variety of reparative and reconstructive techniques to get the job done. 

Throughout his academic journey, Dr. Carré had been honored with several notable awards and scholarships. In 2012 and 2013, he received the Resident Teaching Award from the Department of Surgery at Harvard Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, demonstrating his dedication to medical education. Additionally, he had the privilege of serving as Chief Resident in the Department of Surgery at Harvard Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in 2012 and 2013. His commitment to research was recognized in 2010 when he was named Research Resident of the Year at Stanford University of Surgery.

Further highlighting his research excellence, Dr. Carré received the American College of Surgeon Owen H Wangensteen Scientific Forum Excellence in Research Award during the 2009 Clinic Congress. His passion for exploration was supported by the Hagey Fellowship Grant from 2007 to 2009, allowing him to engage in Quest-Discovery Stage Research Projects focused on “Ex-Vivo and In­Vivo Mechanism of Scaring and Wound Healing.” Lastly, his academic journey commenced with scholarships, including the SKB Foundation Scholarship and the Osher Scholarship in 2002 while attending the University of San Francisco School of Medicine. 

These honors and awards underscore his dedication to excellence and his unwavering commitment to the field of medicine and research.

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Carré enjoys hiking, biking and playing basketball, as well as reading and watching science fiction movies. He is fluent in both English and French.
