Dr. Derrick Sebree Jr., a Psychologist with the Michigan School of Psychology and Monarch Counseling Services

Get to know Psychologist Dr. Derrick Sebree Jr., who serves patients in Michigan.

Dr. Sebree Jr. is a multicultural psychologist and social justice advocate whose work focuses on the intersectionality of race, ethnicity, and our relationship with the ecological world.

As an American Descendant of Slavery male professional, he seeks to illuminate the relationship between ecological and social justice from a multicultural, ecopsychological perspective. He views the Earth–human relationship as a parallel, interconnected process to the human–human connection, for how we view one another is a microcosm of how we view all modes of life.

In his current role, Dr. Sebree Jr. serves as the MA Program Director at the Michigan School of Psychology in Farmington Hills, working primarily with college aged young adults, adolescents, and adults.

“I feel strongly about pedagogy and teaching philosophy, harking to Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed and many other critical consciousness and liberation philosophies when teaching graduate students. I take a developmental teaching approach, with praxis in social justice and empowerment. I grew up knowing the weight of systemic oppression and being taught education is part of how you get out of that system. I want students to have access to me and my knowledge, with the hope of helping them discover their gifts, skills, strengths, and limitations as they navigate the complexity of graduate education. To me, this means promoting student’s exploration and learning through narratives, experientials, and knowledge. Helping graduate students understand themselves within the context of the systems at play will help them become better clinicians and educators”

In addition to his work at the Michigan School of Psychology, Dr. Sebree Jr. is a valued member of Monarch Counseling Services, which offers outpatient psychological services to individuals, couples, and families struggling with a variety of needs.

Client-centered, Dr. Sebree Jr. emphasizes the autonomy of the client through the development of a collaborative relationship, where the client takes part in the treatment planning and course of therapy. He works with a variety of issues, including mood disorders,

racial identity, anxiety, and adjustment issues.

In regards to his educational background, Dr. Sebree Jr. earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology at the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 2011. Subsequently, he completed his Master of Arts Degree in Clinical Psychology at the Michigan School of Psychology in 2012. He also works with the United Methodist Church as a Ministerial Assessment Specialist, where he conducts psychological assessments for pastoral candidates going for licensure.
