Dr. J.W. Randolph Lawson
Dr. Lawson recently retired from the clinical practice of Cardiology at the end of October 2023. He was affiliated with Baylor Scott and White Cardiovascular Consultants of North Texas in Plano and Grapevine, Texas.
His undergraduate training was at American University in Washington D.C., where he graduated magna cum laude in 1973. While at American University, he participated in a work-study program, which involved working in a biochemistry laboratory for 4 years while also taking college courses. During that time, he was able to work with outstanding biochemists and learn about cellular metabolism. He published basic research papers, and was privileged to have met and presented his work to Dr. Hans Krebs, a Nobel Laureate. He earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA in 1978. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospitals in Charleston, SC in 1981. His fellowship in General Cardiology was completed at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center(UTSWMC) in Dallas in 1984. From 1984 to 1989, Dr. Lawson was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at UTSWMC as well as a Research Associate at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Dallas. He studied cardiac metabolism at the basic science level with several publications in scientific journals. In 1989, Dr. Lawson decided to leave academic cardiology to go into private practice in Dallas and the surrounding areas. He remained in private practice until his retirement in October 2023.
Dr. Lawson is board certified in Internal Medicine with a subspecialty in Cardiovascular Diseases. He is a retired Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Lawson is a dedicated family man, married with five children. A daughter followed in his footsteps, and is a structural and interventional cardiologist in academic practice in Virginia. He recently celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary in July 2024. He met his wife, Beverly, when they were chemistry students together at American University. His wife has a doctoral degree in Physical Chemistry. She taught at The Hockaday School for girls in Dallas, TX, for 36 years. She is also retired.
