Veteran Ophthalmologist Offers Comprehensive Eye Services with Compassion & Skilled Expertise

Dr. Michael H. Cunningham, MD, FAAO(Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology), a highly respected retired ophthalmologist in Spokane, Washington, is recognized for more than 40 years of dedicated service in ophthalmic medicine. Practicing both in Spokane and Colfax, WA, he has provided advanced eye care to patients across the region, for which he received the Rural Practitioner of the Year and a special Humanitarian award in the state of Washington. He also served as president of the state ophthalmology society, and served two terms as the AAO Council representative for Washington. Dr. Cunningham was elected chairman of the Patient Education Committee of the AAO. His committee received two national first-place finishes for videos they created on eye diseases. For his work with the AAO, he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr. Cunningham earned his medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine in 1974 and went on to complete his internship and ophthalmology residency at Scott-&-White Memorial Hospital. Board-certified in Ophthalmology, he holds the designation of Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (FAAO). His longstanding career reflects extensive training, experience, and recognition by both patients and colleagues.

Over his career, Dr. Cunningham has treated a wide array of eye conditions, including cataracts, glaucoma, infections, eyelid disorders, eyelid droop (ptosis), diplopia (double vision), and age-related macular degeneration. He employed both medical and surgical interventions, adapting treatment plans to each patient’s specific needs. His expertise spanned diagnostic testing, surgical procedures, and long-term disease management.

Dr. Cunningham has a special commitment to treating the less fortunate and has performed eye surgery projects in Sierra Leone, Ghana, Bangladesh, Mexico, and Cameroon, doing cataract extractions to help blind people see, trabeculectomies for glaucoma, corneal transplants for corneal scarring, strabismus surgery for crossed eyes, removal of eyelid tumors, and repair of ocular injuries.  In Cameroon, he funded the building of an eye clinic that continues to provide high-quality eye care to the people in the region. In addition, he trained multiple eye surgeons during his trips to the Third World. He also treated many charity patients over his career in Washington, employing both medical and surgical interventions. All told, he performed more than 20,000 eye surgeries.

His patients always commented on the way he cared for them, how he gave them his full attention, and how he made himself available day or night. His patients knew they were receiving expert care regardless of their problem, and they were confident that hewould refer them to the appropriate specialist if their problem was not in an area of his expertise.

Dr. Cunningham was not eager to retire, so he has continued to do volunteer work as much as he is able. Dr. Cunningham feels that he was fortunate to have chosen a specialty in which he could help most of the patients he encountered, and he is grateful for the many outstanding professionals who helped him provide the high level of care that he always expected for his patients.
