Dr. Robert S. Greenwood Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award Following Distinguished Career in Pediatric Neurology

UNC’s Longtime Child Neurology Leader Recognized for Over 50 Years of Clinical, Research, and Educational Excellence

Dr. Robert S. Greenwood, MD, a pioneering figure in pediatric neurology, has been awarded the prestigious Roger and Mary Brumback Lifetime Achievement Award by the Child Neurology Society in recognition of his more than five decades of transformative contributions to medicine, research, and education. Dr. Greenwood, who retired from the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine in 2023, continues to serve as co-director of the UNC Neurofibromatosis Clinic, underscoring his enduring commitment to patient care and innovation.

Joining UNC in 1977 after completing his pediatric and neurology training at Washington University in St. Louis, Dr. Greenwood served as Chief of the Division of Child Neurology and Program Director for 33 years. Under his leadership, UNC became a national leader in child neurology training and care. He mentored generations of neurologists and helped establish the first neurocutaneous disorder clinic at UNC, now part of the Children’s Tumor Foundation Neurofibromatosis Network, serving the largest number of neurofibromatosis patients in the Southeast.

Dr. Greenwood’s research has significantly advanced understanding of epilepsy and neurocutaneous disorders, particularly neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). His lab was among the first to identify key morphological and spectroscopic changes in NF1, leading to improved diagnostics and treatment strategies. He has also contributed to numerous clinical trials for antiepileptic drugs, enhancing care for children with epilepsy.

A dedicated educator, Dr. Greenwood has taught learners at all levels—from high school students to international graduate trainees. He played a pivotal role in shaping national training standards through his service on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Neurology Resident Review Committee, helping to establish new subspecialty training programs in neurodevelopmental disabilities and vascular neurology.

Dr. Greenwood’s legacy is reflected in the countless patients, families, and colleagues whose lives he has touched. His accolades include the NIH Teacher Investigator Award, multiple listings in “Best Doctors in America,” and recognition from the Epilepsy Foundation of North Carolina. As he transitions into retirement, Dr. Greenwood remains active in advocacy, research, and mentoring, continuing to inspire the next generation of pediatric neurologists.
