Ochsner Health’s Section Head Leads Heart Failure, Transplant, and ACHD Programs with National Impact
Dr. Thomas W. Young, MD, a board-certified pediatric cardiologist and adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) specialist, continues to lead transformative cardiac care across Louisiana through his work at Ochsner Health. Serving as Section Head of Pediatric Cardiology and ICU, Dr. Young oversees one of the region’s most comprehensive programs for pediatric heart failure, transplantation, and ACHD, while also co-directing the Ochsner Adult Congenital Heart Disease program.
Dr. Young earned his medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He completed a combined internal medicine and pediatrics residency, serving as chief resident, followed by a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the same institution. He is board-certified in pediatric cardiology by the American Board of Pediatrics and in adult congenital heart disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
At Ochsner, Dr. Young leads a multidisciplinary team dedicated to managing complex cardiac conditions, including cardiomyopathies, heart failure, congenital heart disease, and ventricular assist devices. The transplant program under his direction is supported by specialized coordinators, psychologists, social workers, pharmacists, and a palliative care team. Dr. Young also plays a pivotal role in organizing the annual Adult Congenital Heart Symposium in Houston, furthering education and collaboration in the field.
Beyond clinical leadership, Dr. Young is an accomplished researcher with numerous publications in high-impact journals. His work includes studies on pediatric myocarditis in COVID-19 patients, mechanical valve thrombosis during pregnancy, and outcomes in adult congenital heart disease. He also contributes to the education of future medical professionals through his faculty role at Tulane School of Medicine.
Dr. Young sees patients at Ochsner Medical Center’s Jefferson Highway campus and satellite clinics in Covington, Slidell, Lafayette, and Monroe.
