The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical University of Sofia in Bulgaria in 1977. He served his internship at University Hospital, his residency in internal medicine at Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center, and his fellowship in infectious disease at Maimonides Medical Center.
Following his education, Dr. Abter attained board certification in infectious disease and internal medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Infectious disease is a medical specialty dealing with prevention, the diagnosis, and treatment of infections. An infectious disease specialist’s practice also consists of managing nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections.
