Get to know Gastroenterologist Dr. Ellen M. Stein, who now serves patients in New Brunswick, New Jersey. 

Dr. Stein has a special focus in gastrointestinal motility disorders. She has given national and international lectures in motility disorders and published many book chapters and research studies on these complex disorders. 

She spent more than a decade working at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center In Baltimore, Maryland. Recently, she has moved to New Jersey to be the Director of Motility at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. 

As for her academic appointment, she was named an Assistant Professor in 2010 in the Division of Gastroenterology at Johns Hopkins University. She was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2018. She served as Clinical Director of Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center Gastroenterology Division for more than 4 years while she at Hopkins. She has recently joined Rutgers University/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School where she will continue as an Associate Professor.

Graduating with her medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine in 2004, Dr. Stein went on to residency in Internal Medicine at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in 2007. She completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia in 2010, where she studied with the legendary Philip Katz in his advanced esophageal motility laboratory.

She was board certified Gastroenterology in 2010. She is actively participating in Maintenance of Certification with the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and remains certified. 

Among her professional affiliations, Dr. Stein has been elected as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Gastroenterology, and also the American Gastroenterological Association. She is an active member of the American Neurogastrointestinal Motility Society. She has served on leadership committees for both the American Gastroenterology Association and the American College of Gastroenterology.

Her research interests include communication in healthcare, quality improvement,  clinical applications of informatics, dysphagia (swallowing disorders), gastroesophageal reflux disease, esophageal motility, eosinophilic esophagitis, gastroparesis, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), constipation and other gastrointestinal motility disorders.
