Dr. Cairns is a highly respected Emergency Medicine Physician, with thirty-two years of expertise in Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Hospital Operations, and Healthcare Strategic Planning. He currently serves patients at Banner University Medical Center in Tucson.
After earning his medical degree in 1986 at the University of North Carolina, Dr. Cairns completed his residency and fellowship in Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center/St. John Heart Institute. He is also an honors graduate of Dartmouth College and completed his post-graduate training in Genetics of Complex Diseases at The Jackson Laboratory and the Health Care Leadership Academy at the Kenan-Flager School of Business (University of North Carolina). Dr. Cairns is board-certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Cairns possesses a wide range of research interests, including acute infections host response, asthma, trauma, cardiac resuscitation and regionalization of emergency and critical care, as well as preparedness and response. He is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Heart Association, and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine. Additionally, in order to stay up to date on all medical advancements in his field, Dr. Cairns maintains professional memberships with the American Academy of Emergency Medicine and the American Heart Association.
Due to his outstanding achievements, Dr. Cairns has earned many awards for his dedication to excellence in his field, including the Emergency Medicine Foundation Established Investigator Award, the American College of Emergency Physicians Outstanding Contribution in Research Award, the 2014 John Marx Leadership Award, and the Medical Faculty Award as the outstanding graduating medical student at the University of North Carolina. He has published over 200 articles pertaining to his expertise and research interests.
Dr. Cairns attributes his continuous success to dedication, education, ever-changing advancements and technology, as well as teaching others and making a difference. He enjoys traveling in his spare time.
