Leading with Advocacy, Education, and Empowerment for Women’s Well-being

Eugenia Burphy, DNP, MSN, WHNP-C, RN, a Certified Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner, has made significant contributions to women’s health since joining the practice of Jean J. Lochard, MD, OB-Gyn Family Planning in Corona, New York, in February 2016. With a focus on providing specialized gynecological services for pre- and post-menopausal women, as well as counseling for teenagers and preventive care, Ms. Burphy embodies a commitment to empowering women through education and healthcare.

Her journey in healthcare began with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree from Cuttington University College in Liberia, where she first developed her passion for nursing. Ms. Burphy’s academic pursuits continued at Pace University’s Lienhard School of Nursing, where she obtained her Master of Science in Nursing Degree. She later earned an Advanced Certificate in Women’s Health from SUNY Downstate College of Nursing in Brooklyn, ultimately achieving her Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree from Stony Brook University in 2014.

Before her tenure in New York, Ms. Burphy served as a Project Manager for the Ministry of Health in Monrovia, Liberia, from 1986 to 1990. In this role, she was instrumental in coordinating efforts to combat communicable diseases across nine counties. She led initiatives that supported service delivery and community health education in up to 90 rural clinics, collaborating with NGO partners, including USAID and UNICEF, as well as Ministry of Health staff and county supervisors, to address disease outbreaks, immunization efforts, and outreach strategies. Ms. Burphy’s work involved comprehensive policy evaluations and innovative approaches to healthcare delivery, including launching a successful public relations campaign for childhood immunizations. Her ability to navigate cultural challenges while managing budgets and fostering community engagement laid the groundwork for her future endeavors in healthcare.

Upon moving to the United States, Ms. Burphy transitioned to Queens Hospital Center in Jamaica, New York, where she began as a Registered Nurse in OB/GYN. By 1995, she had advanced to the role of Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner, serving in this capacity until her current position in Corona. During her time at Queens Hospital Center, Ms. Burphy provided care to approximately 76 patients weekly, conducting comprehensive assessments and performing various medical procedures. Notably, she emphasized family planning and contraceptive counseling, particularly for teenagers, while educating patients about sexually transmitted infections and preventive health measures.

In addition to her clinical practice, Ms. Burphy served as a Clinical Preceptor, mentoring aspiring nurse practitioners from five local universities. Her commitment to wellness extended to promoting programs on weight management, nutrition, breastfeeding, and smoking cessation, demonstrating her holistic approach to women’s health.

Ms. Burphy’s advocacy for women’s health transcends borders, as she has dedicated her career to serving diverse populations in both Africa and urban communities in the United States. Her unwavering passion for empowering women to achieve their healthcare goals is evident in her direct patient care and community outreach efforts.

Recognizing the potential for broader impact, Ms. Burphy has embarked on an entrepreneurial journey. Through this endeavor, she aims to generate income to support her innovative ideas and ambitious dreams, ensuring the enhancement of women’s healthcare worldwide.

As she continues to impact the lives of women in her community and beyond, Eugenia Burphy’s legacy as a leader in healthcare remains an inspiration for future generations of healthcare professionals.
