Get to know Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. F. Curtis Bryan, who serves patients in Florida.

Dr. Bryan is Chief of the Department of Surgery and Medical Director of Cardiovascular Services, West Florida Division at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.

Practicing since 1997, he has expertise in heart valve repair and replacement, percutaneous valve repair and replacement therapies, surgery for electrical heart disorders, coronary artery bypass grafting, and removal of cardiac masses.

To support his professional ambitions, Dr. Bryan initially completed coursework in aerospace science at Tennessee State University as well as coursework in neurobiology at Harvard University in 1982. He continued his academic efforts with a Bachelor’s Degree, summa cum laude, at the Vanderbilt University School of Arts and Sciences in 1984. He eventually concluded his formal studies at the Emory University School of Medicine, from which he graduated with a Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1988. 

Thereafter, Dr. Bryan completed his residencies in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, where he served as administrative chief resident in cardiothoracic surgery and chief resident in general surgery. He was also a fellow in cardiothoracic surgery at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals, performed a research fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the Carlyle-Fraser Heart Center, and is a graduate of the Harvard Medical School Surgical Leadership Program.

Board certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery, the doctor is a Diplomate of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS). The ABTS is an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest.

Before assuming the positions at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, Dr. Bryan held various roles within the healthcare field. From 2021 to 2022, he worked at the AdventHealth Medical Group in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, where he served as the Medical Director of Clinical Support and Cardiovascular Care. Prior to that, he was an attending staff surgeon in the same department from 2019 to 2022.

Additionally, Dr. Bryan was actively involved with the West Florida Division of HCA, where he served as the Medical Director for the Structural Heart Valve Program from 2015 to 2019. He also took on the role of Medical Director for Cardiovascular Services within the same division from 2013 to 2019. During this period, between 2011 and 2019, he was recruited as an attending staff surgeon specializing in cardiothoracic surgery at Cardiac Surgical Associates LLP.

Dr. Bryan is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP).

His professional memberships include the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, the South Atlantic Cardiovascular Society, the Florida Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons, and the Heart Valve Society of America.  

Cardiac surgery, or cardiovascular surgery, is surgery on the heart or great vessels performed by cardiac surgeons. A cardiothoracic surgeon is a doctor who performs surgery on the heart, lungs, and other thoracic structures. They may focus on a particular area of the chest, ie cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, or congenital cardiac surgery, which is concerned with babies and children born with heart diseases and defects.

Attributing his wealth of success to his passion for his craft, Dr. Bryan has accrued several impressive accolades throughout his career. The recipient of the Heart to Heart Award, he was been notably recognized among America’s Top Doctors, a Top Doctor in Florida, America’s Top Physicians in Cardiothoracic Surgery by the Consumer Research Council of America between 2005 and 2006, a Top Doctor in Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery with Castle Connolly between 2018 and 2023, America’s Most Honored Doctors between 2022 and 2023, and the Top Doctors by Tampa Magazine in 2023. 

Among the many highlights of his career, Dr. Bryan is incredibly proud of his tenure at Northside Hospital, where he was able to obtain a three-star ranking from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons in both cardiac surgery and aortic valve and coronary bypass surgery, a combined procedure.

Speaking about his personal accomplishments, Dr. Bryan achieved the remarkable feat of finishing the Ironman World Championship triathlon in Kona, Hawaii.
