Dr. Faiqa  Cheema is a board-certified Infectious Disease specialist who is currently serving transplant patients at Hartford Healthcare – an 819-bed acute care teaching hospital located in Hartford, Connecticut. More specifically, she is affiliated with the Transplant Surgical Program and Comprehensive Liver Center at Hartford Hospital that successfully performs kidney, heart, and liver transplants. The Transplant Surgical program at Hartford Hospital is a center of excellence for living donor kidney and a Living Donor Champion Program. Transplantation in HIV patients is also conducted at this program.

In 2017, Hartford Hospital Transplant program performed 84 kidney transplants, 24 liver transplants and 12 heart transplants. In 2018 over 112 kidney transplant, 32 liver transplants and 13 heart transplants were successfully performed.

Dr. Cheema is board-certified in infectious disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Dr. Cheema completed her medical degree from Dow Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan in 2001. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan in 2006, followed by a fellowship in Infectious Disease at Henry Ford Hospital in 2011. She has additional fellowship training in Transplant Infectious Disease from University of Toronto, Canada, one of the busiest transplant programs in North America with 607 adult transplants every year.

Upon return from her  transplant fellowship training in 2016, Dr Cheema, started the Transplant Infectious Disease program at Hartford Hospital, Connecticut,  to provide a unique service to the community of Hartford and is the current Director of Transplant Infectious Disease Program at Hartford Healthcare.

Dr Cheema works collaboratively with surgical transplantation teams to facilitate the evaluation, prevention, and treatment of infectious diseases in solid organ transplant recipients at Hartford Hospital. She  provides skillful recommendations to the medical and surgical teams on a continuous basis and provides niche area of expertise to this at-risk population. Dr Cheema also participates in the development of antimicrobial and immunosuppressive protocols for the transplant surgical program and facilitates listing of patients for organ transplantation.

In addition, Dr Cheema also provides educational opportunities for Infectious Disease fellows and medical residents from University of Connecticut School of Medicine in the area of infectious diseases and management of immunocompromised hosts.

Dr Faiqa Cheema is also recipient of Top Doctor Award in Infectious Disease and Transplant Infectious Disease for 2019
