Dr. Akhrass is a highly-experienced physician with 20 years in the field of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, both in private practice and research. He joined the Diabetes & Glandular Disease Clinic in San Antonio, Texas as sixth partner in February of 2007. His areas of expertise include diabetes mellitus, obesity, diseases of the thyroid, and PCOS.
Founded in July of 1979, the Diabetes & Glandular Disease Clinic (DGD) offers the best in treatment for hormonal and metabolic disorders such as type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes, thyroid disease, osteoporosis, lipid disorders (high cholesterol), pituitary and adrenal gland disease, menstrual disorders and hirsutism (excessive facial hair on women). A Syrian native, he received his medical degree, graduating in the top 10% of his class, from Aleppo University School of Medicine in April of 1993. He then completed his residency in internal medicine at Union Memorial Hospital and his fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois in 2001.
Accomplished in the field of research and a published author, Dr. Akhrass has had articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is an active member of several esteemed professional groups, including the Endocrine Society, the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and the Texas Medical Association.
An authority in his field, he is board-certified in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism & internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
