Pertaining to his educational background, Dr. Chien attended college at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, where he graduated in 1999 with Departmental and Phi Beta Kappa Honors in Biophysics. He attended the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai for both medical school and internship training. He then completed his residency in ophthalmology at Stanford University, and his medical retina fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami.
In 2008, Dr. Chien joined Kaiser Permanente in California as a medical retina specialist and cataract surgeon where he has performed over 5000 cataract surgeries in the last 10 years. His publication and work with plaquenil retinopathy during this time led to an improved plaquenil screening program for the organization and helped save the sight of numerous patients who were previously undetected.
A member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, he is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). The ABO is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.
In the state of Florida, Dr. Chien is affiliated with the following hospitals: Memorial Hospital West and Memorial Regional Hospital.
To date, he has been published in journals such as Nature Neuroscience, Neuron, Archives of Ophthalmology, Retina, Retina Today, and JAMA Ophthalmology. He has also presented scientific posters at numerous ophthalmology society meetings.
