An enthusiastic researcher, he holds a research position at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, focusing on DNA damage responses, genome instability pathways, targeted therapy, and breast cancer.

It is one of the three primary specialties – the other two being surgical and medical oncology – involved in the treatment of cancer. Among his various accolades, Dr. Gupta has been the recipient of the 2013 Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award for Medical Scientists, 2010 Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program Postdoctoral Fellowship Award, 2007 Harold M. Weintraub Graduate Student Award, 2006 Travel Award from the Metastasis Research Society, 2006 Julian R. Rachele Prize for Best Graduate Student Research Paper, 2005 Vincent du Vigneaud Graduate Student Research Prize, 2004 Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program Predoctoral Award, and 2000 Francis E. Knock Prize in biological chemistry.
