With over four decades of experience in neurology and pain medicine, Dr. Jay’s career includes a blend of commercial, clinical, and academic achievements. He is considered one of the first physicians to support the establishment of pain medicine as a clinical subspecialty.
At present, he practices at UNC Hospitals Neurology Clinic in Chapel Hill, North Carolina & UNC Neurology at Panther Creek in Cary – both of which are a part of UNC Health Care. His clinical interests include pain management and headache disorders such as migraine with and without aura, chronic daily headaches, tension-type headaches (episodic and chronic), medication overuse headaches, cluster headache, and other trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias. He also treats some pain, including fibromyalgia, post-traumatic headaches and peripheral neuropathy.1
Alongside his clinical role as a board-certified neurologist, Dr. Jay serves as a Clinical Professor within the Department of Neurology, Division of Headache at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill. He is also the Founder and CEO of Virtuous Pharma, Inc, where he is leading the development of late-stage pharmaceuticals, as well as frequently consults for major pharmaceutical corporations and biotechs on strategy, clinical development, and trial design in areas related to the central nervous system.
A Fellow of the American Academy of Pain Management and the doctor is board-certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, which is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high-quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists.
After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Neurology at Franklin and Marshall College in 1972, Dr. Jay went on to obtain his medical degree from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in 1976. This was followed by an internship in internal medicine and a residency in neurology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in 1977 and 1980, respectively.
For the purpose of staying up to date in his field, he remains a member of the American Academy of Pain Medicine (a founder), the American Headache Society, the American Pain Society, the American Society of Neurorehabilitation, the Eastern Pain Association (Past President), the Florida Academy of Pain Medicine (Past President), the International Association for the Study of Pain, and the International Headache Society.
Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Neurologists are licensed medical specialists who diagnose and treat disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles of patients. They examine a patient’s mental and physical status, conduct medical tests and scans, and evaluate the results to diagnose and treat the patient.
Among his outstanding contributions and achievements in the field of neurology, Dr. Jay is the author of five textbooks and more than 170 peer-reviewed research papers and book chapters on the topics of headache, pain, and traumatic brain injury. He is also a frequent lecturer on headache and pain of all types, minor traumatic brain injury, and the autonomic nervous system.
