Expert Thoracic Surgeon and Medical Director Focuses on Early Detection and Advanced Treatments

The Tate Cancer Center proudly announces its continued commitment to providing exceptional cancer care under the guidance of Gavin Leon Henry, MD, FACS, a board-certified thoracic surgeon and the Chair of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UM BWMC). Dr. Henry, who specializes in treating conditions of the esophagus, lung, and mediastinum, aims to enhance patient outcomes through innovative treatments and minimally invasive robotic surgery techniques. 

As the Medical Director of The Tate Cancer Center, Dr. Henry leads a comprehensive lung cancer screening program, ensuring early detection and intervention for patients at risk. The center, named in honor of community philanthropists Creston and Betty Tate, is dedicated to delivering a full spectrum of cancer care services. The Tate Cancer Center combines clinical expertise with innovative treatment strategies and supportive services to create tailored treatment plans that meet the unique needs of each patient. 

Dr. Henry joined the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) in 2017 as the Director of Clinical Operations for the Division of Thoracic Surgery. In addition to his leadership role at The Tate Cancer Center, he is also an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and serves as the Chief of the Section of Thoracic Surgery at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore. His extensive credentials allow him to perform surgeries at several esteemed institutions, including the University of Maryland Medical Center, the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health Center, the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center, and Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore.

Dr. Henry earned his Medical Degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed his internship and general surgery residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He further honed his skills through a fellowship as a cardiothoracic clinical associate and staff fellow through a joint program with the George Washington School of Medicine in Washington, D.C.

A respected leader in his field, Dr. Henry is board-certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the Southeastern Surgical Congress, and actively participates in several professional organizations, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association. 

Dr. Henry was honored with the Top Doctor Award in Baltimore from 2009 to 2012. He has since continued to receive recognition as Top Doctor, Thoracic Surgery in Baltimore Magazine every year from 2014 to 2023.

“My main mission is to grow The Tate Cancer Center both academically and clinically and strengthen the relationship with the University of Maryland Cancer Network,” Dr. Henry stated. Under his leadership, The Tate Cancer Center is poised to enhance its impact on the community by advancing cancer care through education, innovation, and collaboration.
