An Army veteran originally from Massillon, Ohio, Dr. Johnson specializes in general ophthalmology, cataract surgery, and oculoplastic surgery. He joined Kellis Eye and Laser Center in Chardon, Ohio in August of 2009. The mission of Kellis Eye & Laser Center is to ensure patients the best possible vision performance by providing the highest quality vision and eye health care possible in a comfortable and professional environment.
In addition, Dr. Johnson holds clinical privileges at Chardon Surgery Center, Eye Care Associates in Youngstown, UHHS Geauga Regional Hospital in Chardon, the Center for Advanced Eye Surgery in Youngstown, the Lewis Stokes Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Cleveland, and Novamed Surgery Center in Sandusky. Moreover, he continues to be active in the medical education of the ophthalmology residents at University Hospitals of Cleveland by serving as a Clinical Instructor.
Utilizing the latest research, Dr. Johnson provides care to his patients in his office and in the operating room. He is board certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology and elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
After leaving active military duty and entering the Army Reserves as a Russian translator, Dr. Johnson attended Kent State University while continuing to work a full-time job at his family’s business. He was proud to graduate Magna Cum Laude with dual degrees in Biology and Russian Translation. He was admitted to the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and, as a graduating senior, he received the prestigious Ralph Dexter Faculty Scholarship Award.
He then went on to attend Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. His interest in medical education led to his development of a medical student handbook for use in their clinical rotations. He also participated in health-related outreach programs targeted to children and patients in underserved communities.
After earning his medical degree in 2005, Dr. Johnson successfully completed his intern year at Akron City Hospital before returning to Cleveland for ophthalmology training at University Hospitals. During his ophthalmology training, he continued to receive awards for his scholarly activities and published a sentinel medical education study in the journal Ophthalmology.
After his residency, Dr. Johnson completed his fellowship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery with Dr. Augustine Kellis. In 2009, he received the Case Western Reserve University Professionalism in Ophthalmology Award.
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.
In his spare time, Dr. Johnson spends as much time as possible with his wife and three children. His latest passion has been for cooking with an emphasis on BBQ, even taking first place in a local rib-cook off near Chautauqua, New York. He also enjoys traveling and remains an avid cyclist at home, typically riding several thousand miles per year.
