After graduating with his Bachelor of Arts degree from the New York University College of Arts and Sciences in 1994, Dr. Berberian went on to earn his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine in 1998. This was followed by an internship and residency in surgery at the New York University Medical Center in 1999 and 2003, respectively.
Dr. Berberian also conducted research at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in the laboratory of Henry Spotnitz, MD between 2003 and 2005. He published several scientific articles in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery and the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
Wanting to further his training, he completed his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey in 2008. He then completed an advanced fellowship in mitral valve repair at Mount Sinai Medical Center in 2009.
Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax. Cardiothoracic surgeons are medical doctors who specialize in surgical procedures inside the thorax, which may involve the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest.
