Operating from the Penn State Health Children’s Lancaster Pediatric Center in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Penn State Health’s Pediatric Subspecialty Center at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Reading, and Penn State Health Pediatric Specialties in Hershey, Dr. McSherry is committed to delivering exceptional patient care tailored to combat a wide array of infectious diseases affecting children.

His clinical expertise encompasses the treatment of antibiotic-resistant infections, herpes simplex, bacterial diarrhea, and various fungal and liver infections. Dr. McSherry is adept at managing complex cases, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), persistent or recurrent fevers, and intricate pneumonia scenarios. His focus on newborns and children with pre-existing health conditions ensures that vulnerable patients receive comprehensive evaluations and tailored treatment plans for infections like Lyme disease, tuberculosis (TB), HIV infection, and swollen glands.

Dr. McSherry earned his Medical Degree from Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León in 1983, followed by completion of the Fifth Pathway program at UMDNJ-Rutgers Medical School in 1984. His pediatric internship and residency were completed at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, culminating in a fellowship in pediatric infectious disease in 1989. This extensive training has equipped him with the necessary skills to excel in pediatric infectious care.

Dr. McSherry is Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Infectious Diseases at the Penn State College of Medicine. He actively contributes to the education of future medical professionals. His recognition as Teacher of the Year for the Department in 2015 and his receipt of Dean’s Awards for Outstanding teaching in 2015 and 2018 underscores his dedication to teaching and mentorship.

Dr. McSherry’s research interests include congenital and neonatal infections, HIV infection and tuberculosis, invasive bacterial infections in infants and children, and pediatric Staphylococcus aureus infections. His ongoing research contributes to the advancement of pediatric infectious disease knowledge, ultimately benefiting the health and well-being of children in the community.
