Gordon is a Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner (NP) who is currently serving patients at the Gilliam Youth Services Center in Denver, Colorado. The Gilliam Youth Services Center opened its doors in April of 1903 and is the oldest state operated detention center in Colorado. The program serves up to sixty-four youth, both male and female, from the 2nd Judicial District located in the city and county of Denver. Through restorative principles, the Center teaches youth to become responsible, productive citizens while keeping the community safe.

Gordon’s areas of expertise include pediatrics and adolescent health – among others. Pediatrics is the branch of medicine dealing with the health and medical care of infants, children, and adolescents from birth up to the age of 18. Adolescent health, or youth health, is the range of approaches to preventing, detecting or treating young people’s health and well being.

Gordon is also clinical faculty for Platt College of Nursing where he has been on staff since 2010.  In this capacity he has been an instructor for most all of the undergraduate nursing curriculum. Gordon has been the go to person for the school when a class needs to be covered due to unexpected vacancy until a suitable replacement can be found.

Gordon earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Regis University, followed by his Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from the University of Colorado and his Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Regis University.

In order to stay up to date in his field, Gordon maintains a professional membership with the Eastern Colorado Council of Black Nurses, the American Nurses Association, and the Colorado Nurses Association. He is also President of Rocky Mountain Regional Chapter for the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine.

A Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a nurse who has graduated from a master’s in  nursing program and met the requirements outlined by a country, state, province or similar licensing body to obtain a advanced practice nursing license. NPs fulfill a variety of job duties. In addition to the primary role in assessing, treating and caring for patients, their responsibilities also include educating patients and the public about a variety of medical conditions, as well as providing emotional support and advice to the families of their patients. Other NP job functions include ordering and performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results, operating medical equipment, ordering and administering medications, recording patients’ symptoms and medical histories, and assisting with patient rehabilitation and follow-up. Nurse practitioners can also practice independently in the State of Colorado as well as other locations in the US.

Gordon has future inspirations to teach nursing outside of the US in a country that has not experienced the corruption and lack of quality health care outcomes that the US has experienced.  He has a desire to help others in environments where his expertise may help them from making some of the same care and treatment mistakes that he has witnessed in America.
