Harnessing Over Two Decades of Expertise in Pediatric Critical Care and CVICU

Rochester, Minnesota – Dr. Grace M. Arteaga, a distinguished pediatrician and pediatric critical care specialist at Mayo Clinic Children’s Center, has been recognized for her outstanding contributions to the field of pediatric medicine and education. She has made significant strides in the areas of cardiovascular physiology, patient safety, and medical education.

In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Arteaga serves as Co-editor of Pediatric Fundamentals of Critical Care Support at the Society of Critical Care Medicine, Director of the Pediatric Simulation Program at Mayo Clinic, and a member of the national simulation group at the International Network for Simulation-based Pediatric Innovation, Research & Education. She also holds academic appointments as Professor of Pediatrics at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and Assistant Professor of Physiology at Mayo Clinic Cell and Regenerative Physiology Laboratory, led by Gary C. Sieck, Ph.D.

Dr. Arteaga’s research focuses on intracellular cardiac signaling, cardiac pathophysiology, and the molecular interaction of contractile proteins in physiologic and pathophysiologic conditions. Her dedication to medical education and simulation techniques has led to groundbreaking studies on the effects of hypothermia and rewarming in myocardial contraction, the impact of COVID-19 on the pediatric population, and pediatric quality excellence in critical care settings through virtual and in-person education.

Dr. Arteaga embarked on her medical journey in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores, followed by a Medical Degree from Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila in 1983. She then completed an internship at Specialty Clinic, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social in 1984. Her dedication led her to serve as a Social Service General Practitioner in a rural town of Gilita, Coahuila, with Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social in 1985. 

Continuing her medical education, Dr. Arteaga pursued residency training in pediatrics at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1992, where she later became Chief Resident in Pediatrics in 1993. Her expertise expanded further with a fellowship in pediatric critical care at Children’s Medical Center, University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 1996.

Board certified in pediatrics and pediatric critical care medicine, Dr. Arteaga is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics and holds memberships in numerous medical organizations, including the Minnesota Medical Society, the American Physiological Society, the American Medical Association, the  Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Zumbro Valley Medical Society, and the Minnesota Medical Association, to name a few.

In 2020, Dr. Arteaga received recognition as a Top Doctor from Minnesota Monthly and was honored as one of the Pediatric Academic Mentoring Program Top Doctors by the Pediatric Academy. Then, in 2022, she was awarded the Innovation in Education Award by the Society of Critical Care Medicine. These accolades highlight Dr. Arteaga’s commitment to excellence in patient care, education, and research, solidifying her reputation as a leading figure in the field of pediatric medicine.
