Dr. Gerstein is a fellowship-trained hematologist-oncologist serving as the Medical Director of Cancer Institute of Long Island in Great Neck, New York. He offers a broad array of services geared to address today’s most common concerns among cancer patients. 

The mission of Cancer Institute of Long Island is to provide patients with personalized, high-quality care. The Institute is dedicated to improving and maintaining health through new, innovative and less toxic techniques.  

The treatments available at the facility include: chemotherapy, hormone therapy, antibody therapy, high dose IV vitamin drips, mineral infusions, localized hyperthermia and killer T-cell enhancement therapy (immuno-oncology techniques). Dr. Gerstein was a member of the exclusive Biomedical Research Program at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York and the Albany Medical College, where he earned both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1978, after six years of study. While earning his degree, he was awarded the Mosby Award for Outstanding Research in the field of virology. He then successfully completed a residency in internal medicine as well as a fellowship in medical oncology and hematology at North Shore University Hospital and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital from 1978 through 1984. 

Subsequent to his education, he attained board certification in medical oncology and internal medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Licensed in New York State and Florida, Dr. Gerstein is currently a Senior Attending Physician on the staff of both North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park. He has held teaching positions at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and the Cornell School of Medicine, and is currently the medical advisor to the Neuroendocrine Cancer Awareness Network.  

As a principle investigator, he has participated in over twenty research projects in the field of medical oncology, and has published several papers in nationally recognized journals. He brings over 37 years of clinical expertise to his patients, having refined his treatment techniques to optimize outcomes and minimize toxicities by incorporating several alternative modalities with lower dose chemotherapy.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease.

An active member of the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation, Dr. Gerstein attributes his success to his passion for the field and personal attention to patients.

Outside of the office, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing tennis, reading, and traveling.
