Get to know Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon Dr. Hannah Copeland, who serves patients in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

As a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, Dr. Copeland cares for patients who require all aspects of advanced cardiovascular procedures up to and including heart transplant. She is experienced in cardiac transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and cardiac critical care medicine.

In May of 2020, she joined Lutheran Heart Physicians after serving on the cardiac surgery team at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. She practices at Lutheran Health Physicians – Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery – Lutheran Medical Park & Lutheran Health Physicians – Heart Transplantation, both of which are located in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Alongside her clinical role, she serves as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine – Fort Wayne.

At the start of her academic career, Dr. Copeland graduated with her medical degree from the  University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Medicine in 2006. She then went on to perform her residency in general surgery at the University of California at San Diego, her residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Loma Linda University, and her fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery transplant at Indiana University.

Experienced in cardiovascular/thoracic surgery and heart transplantation, she is board-certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS). The ABTS is an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest.

Attaining fellowship status, Dr. Copeland is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC). She is also a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the American Society of Transplantation, and the Association of Academic Surgery.

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax. Cardiothoracic surgeons are medical doctors who specialize in surgical procedures inside the thorax, which may involve the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. Alongside performing surgery, they also diagnose and treat diseases of these organs. 

Throughout her line of work, Dr. Copeland has contributed to numerous research presentations and publications on various cardiac topics.

Among her various accolades include Patients’ Choice Award (2018, 2020), On-Time Doctor Award (2020), and Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2020).

Outside of the operating room, she enjoys cooking with her family.
