Haris Choudry, MD, MPH, a Physiatrist with SUNY Downstate Medical Center

Get to know Physiatrist Dr. Haris Choudry, who serves patients in Brooklyn, New York.

Dr. Choudry is a board-certified physiatrist rendering care to patients of all ages and backgrounds with a focus of treatment on restoring function and independence. He specializes in the care and treatment of individuals with orthopedic injuries, amputation, musculoskeletal issues, including chronic pain and arthritis, neurologic conditions, as well as severe deconditioning and general debility.

Holding several prestigious positions at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, he is the Medical Director of Inpatient Rehabilitation, Associate Residency Program Director of PM&R, and an attending physician. 

As part of his responsibilities, he leads the PM&R Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation and Hospital PM&R consult services, as well as oversees resident and medical student education and training, including leading academic and clinical instruction for both groups.

Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Choudry graduated with his Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Oklahoma. He then went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, after which he completed his residency in physical medicine & rehabilitation at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University.

In order to further his knowledge and skills, Dr. Choudry completed a fellowship at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, where he specialized in rehabilitation medicine. Additionally, he holds a Master of Public Health degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, which has provided him with a strong foundation in public health principles and practices.

Improving long-term outcomes through increasing knowledge and compliance, the doctor is board-certified in physical medicine & rehabilitation by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR). The mission of the ABPMR is to serve the public by improving the quality of patient care in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R).

Actively involved in the education and training of medical students and residents, Dr. Choudry serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, and is the Associate Student Clerkship Director.

Physical medicine and rehabilitation, also known as physiatry, is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities.
