Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Harmeet Chawla, who serves patients throughout the State of Ohio.

Dr. Chawla, a board-certified clinical ophthalmologist, is the Medical Director of Eye Specialists of Ohio. He has performed over 140,000 ophthalmic surgical procedures including cataract, glaucoma, eyelid, corneal transplant, laser vision correction, and diabetic laser eye surgery.

During the early days of his academic journey, Dr. Chawla received his undergraduate training at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. There, he was among the top in his class acquiring a GPA of 3.97 on a 4.0 scale.

After completing only three years of college, he was accepted to medical school one year early. At the Medical College of Virginia, Dr. Chawla earned his medical degree, ranking second in the class of 1987.

Thereafter, he performed his internship at Georgetown University Medical Center in 1988, and received his eye surgery training at the prestigious University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary in 1991.

Striving for excellence and compassion in eye care, Dr. Chawla is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). The ABO is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America. 

Licensed to practice medicine in Ohio, Dr. Chawla is affiliated with OhioHealth Berger Hospital and Chillicothe Veterans Affairs Medical Center. 

Furthermore, he is actively involved in his field, being a member of esteemed organizations such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery. 

In a full one and a half page cover story, The Columbus Dispatch named Dr. Chawla the “Eye Surgeon for Eye Doctors”. He dedicates a portion of his time teaching other eye care professionals the latest surgical and eye care techniques, along with providing continuing educational seminars for colleagues. He also travels to third world countries where he volunteers his surgical services. 

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Chawla enjoys travel and athletics.
