Having been in practice for over three decades, Heather is a registered nurse who works at the Central North Correctional Centre. It is a maximum security prison located in Penetanguishene, Ontario, Canada.
Ever since she was three years old, she knew that she wanted to pursue a career in nursing. She graduated with her nursing degree from Georgian College in 1990, after which she embarked on her professional journey with a passion and a desire to care for patients.
Prior to her current endeavours, Heather worked in a nursing home. However, the death of her patients upset her too much so she decided to switch to serving patients in a maximum security prison, mostly focusing on mental health care. She intends to stay there until she retires.
A Registered Nurse (RN) is a nurse who has graduated from a nursing program and met the requirements outlined by a country, state, province or similar licensing body to obtain a nursing license. RNs fulfill a variety of job duties. In addition to their primary role in treating and caring for patients, their responsibilities also include educating patients and the public about a variety of medical conditions, as well as providing emotional support and advice to the families of their patients. Other RN job functions include leadership, research, performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results, operating medical equipment, administering medications, recording patients’ symptoms and medical histories, and assisting with patient rehabilitation and follow-up.
Outside of the practice of nursing, Heather enjoys knitting.
