Dr. Hann is a top professional in the field of gastroenterology and transplant hepatology. She is the Director of the Liver Disease Prevention Center at the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 

As such, she treats achalasia, alcoholic hepatitis, alcohol-induced liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, celiac disease, cholangitis, cirrhosis, diverticular disease, drug-induced hepatitis, fatty liver disease, gastritis, gastroparesis, irritable bowel syndrome, liver cancer and more. She performs capsule endoscopy, ultrasounds, and esophageal manometry.

Alongside her clinical role, she serves as a Professor within the Department of Medicine at Sidney Kimmel Medical College.

With a broad educational background, Dr. Hann graduated with her medical degree from Seoul National University College of Medicine in South Korea in 1961. She then went on to perform her internships at Seoul National University Hospital and Worcester City Hospital. This was followed by a residency at Boston Children’s Hospital and a fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Massachusetts. 

Subsequent to her education, the doctor attained board certification in pediatrics through the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The ABP exists to promote excellence in medical care for children and adolescents. Certification represents dedication by pediatricians, pediatric subspecialists, and pediatric trainees to the highest level of professionalism in patient care.

Between 1971-1988, Dr. Hann was a member (physician) of the Clinical Research Division & the Co-Director of the Liver Cancer Prevention Center, Fox Chase Cancer Center under the direction of Dr. Baruch S. Blumberg, the 1976 Nobel Laureate for Discovery of Hepatitis B Virus. Her goal was to provide the best care for patients with chronic hepatitis B and liver cancer utilizing the most updated therapy for the hepatitis B virus infection to prevent liver cancer.

Since 1999, Dr. Hann has been an active speaker in the field of hepatitis B where she has shared her knowledge with healthcare leaders in the U.S. and Asian countries, including Korea, Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, China, Vietnam, Australia, Panama, and multiple Korean American (and Chinese) churches across the United States. She also served on CDC Hepatitis B Advisory Group for Asian/Pacific Islander, Immunization Action Coalition, Hepatitis B Foundation, and National Asian Pacific Leadership Initiative on Cancer.

To date, her scientific publication includes a total of more than 283 articles and abstracts & 10 book chapters. She is the co-author of  “Asian American Guidelines for Management of Chronic Hepatitis B”, among others.

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders. A gastroenterologist is a physician who has extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the esophagus, stomach, small intestines, colon, liver, pancreas, and biliary system.

In honor of her clinical expertise, Dr. Hann has received many awards, including the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Hepatitis B Foundation; the Women in Leadership Award from Women’s Way; the Korean American Pioneer Award; and one that perhaps brings her the most pride, the 2003 Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania Award.

As fulfilled as she is by her professional accomplishments, she is equally proud of her family, which includes two daughters, Christine and Carolyn.
