Hoda Pourhassan, MD, a Hematologist-Oncologist with City of Hope

Get to know Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Hoda Pourhassan, who serves patients throughout the State of California.

A triple board certified hematologist-oncologist, Dr. Pourhassan merges groundbreaking research findings with exceptional clinical therapies to enhance results for patients diagnosed with hematologic cancers.

Since 2021, she has held the position of Assistant Professor within the Division of Leukemia, Department of Hematology & Hematopoietic Transplantation at City of Hope in Duarte, California. Additionally, she maintains affiliations with City of Hope Newport Beach and City of Hope West Covina.

For Dr. Pourhassan, the role of a physician is where the intersection of scientific curiosity and human compassion thrives. She places great faith in City of Hope’s collaborative treatment approach and integrates her patient care with knowledge acquired through her research into the genetics of blood cancers. 

Academically, Dr. Pourhassan earned her Master of Health Administration and Management Degree and her Medical Degree at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in Chicago. She began her postgraduate training with a residency at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, during which she conducted research into stem cell transplantation at University of Minnesota. She then served as chief resident at Riverside Community Hospital and as a clinical instructor at University of California Riverside. 

Furthering her training, Dr. Pourhassan completed fellowships in oncology/hematology at Loma Linda University and in bone marrow transplantation and cellular therapy at City of Hope.

Triple board certified in hematology, medical oncology, and internal medicine, she is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

On a professional level, Dr. Pourhassan is an active member of the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Iranian Society for Protecting Rights of the Child, and the American College of Physicians.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease.
