As for his academic title, Dr. Kerpen serves as the Lorber Professor of Medical Education at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatric medicine that concerns itself with the kidneys: the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease and hypertension, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. A nephrologist is a medical doctor who specializes in kidney care and treating diseases of the kidneys. 

In honor of his clinical expertise, Dr. Kerpen is the recipient of 7 Teacher of the Year awards and 2 Lifetime Teaching Awards from the Department of Medicine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, the National Outstanding Volunteer Clinical Teacher Award of the American College of Physicians (2014) given to one physician a year, Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2011, 2012, 2013) and Patients’ Choice Award (2012, 2013, 2018). In addition, he serves as Vice President of the Performance Improvement Coordinating Group at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and the Student Advancement Committee at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.
