A globally recognized leader in pathology informatics, Dr. Pantanowitz returns to Pittsburgh after serving in key academic and administrative roles at renowned institutions, including the University of Michigan.
His extensive educational background includes a BScHons, Medical Degree, and PhD from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. Dr. Pantanowitz further honed his expertise during his residency training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard, and subsequent fellowships in hematopathology and cytopathology at Baystate Medical Center, Tufts University. He is board-certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Cytopathology, and Clinical Informatics. His commitment to healthcare management is underscored by his Master of Health Administration (MHA) from Ohio University.
Since joining UPMC/Pitt in 2010, Dr. Pantanowitz has played a pivotal role in advancing pathology informatics as the Vice Chair for Pathology Informatics and Director of Cytopathology. His expertise in digital and computational pathology is complemented by his leadership in national organizations, including serving as president of both the Association for Pathology Informatics (API) and the Digital Pathology Association (DPA).
Dr. Pantanowitz is renowned for his pioneering work in Digital Pathology and Computational Pathology. His PhD dissertation focused on the feasibility of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Anatomical Pathology, a field he has actively contributed to for over two decades. As a co-founder of the Journal of Pathology Informatics, he has established a platform for the dissemination of critical research and developments in this transformative area of medicine. His initiatives include the creation of the Pathology Informatics Essential for Residents (PIER) curriculum and the publication of numerous white papers and guidelines that advance the validation of whole slide imaging, telepathology, quantitative image analysis, and machine learning.
In addition to his informatics expertise, Dr. Pantanowitz is a distinguished cytopathologist. He has served as president of the American Society of Cytopathology (ASC) and has authored multiple cytology textbooks. His contributions to the field are recognized in over 600 peer-reviewed publications, including articles in leading journals such as Cancer Cytopathology and Diagnostic Cytopathology.
Dr. Pantanowitz’s research interests encompass both pathology informatics and non-gynecological cytopathology. He has been a recipient of grant funding since 2003 and is an active member of 22 professional and scientific societies. His editorial leadership includes serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Pathology Informatics and being on the editorial boards of nine other reputable pathology journals.
With over 400 invited talks, courses, and workshops presented globally, Dr. Pantanowitz is a sought-after speaker and educator in the field. His entrepreneurial spirit is evident through his participation in multiple industry-sponsored research projects, the establishment of two spin-off companies, and the holding of four patents related to digital pathology medical devices.
