Since July 2021, Dr. Dull has served as the Medical Director of the Pre-Anesthesia Clinic and Perioperative Surgical Home at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson. His role ensures that patients receive optimal preoperative care, a crucial aspect of enhancing surgical outcomes. In April 2022, he expanded his responsibilities as Director of Clinical Operations for Anesthesia Services, overseeing the Pre-Operative Area and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). His collaborative efforts with perioperative leaders aim to improve efficiency, enhance patient safety, and elevate the patient experience, marking him as a pivotal member of the hospital’s leadership.
In addition to his clinical roles, Dr. Dull is a full-time professor of Anesthesiology with Tenure at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson, where he holds joint appointments in the Departments of Pathology, Physiology, and Surgery.
His academic journey began at Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology-Physiology in 1984. Dr. Dull continued at Penn State, obtaining a Master of Science in Physiology in 1986 and a Ph.D. in Physiology in 1989. Following this, he pursued postdoctoral research as a Research Fellow in Vascular Pathology at the University of Chicago from 1989 to 1991. He then completed a fellowship in the Department of Pathology at the University of Chicago in 1991 before earning his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1995, where he served as President of the UIC Medical Student Council and a Curriculum Committee Representative. Dr. Dull subsequently undertook a transitional internship at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University before completing his residency in Anesthesiology / Critical Care at Harvard Medical School’s Massachusetts General Hospital from 1996 to 1999.
Dr. Dull is an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Society of Anesthesiologists (Committee on Research, FAER Study Section; Critical Care Committee; Experimental Circulation Committee), the American College of Perioperative Medicine, the American Society for Enhanced Recovery, the American College of Healthcare Executives, the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society, the Arizona State Anesthesiology Society, the American Medical Association, the Illinois State Medical Society, the American College of Physician Executives, the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, the Association of University Anesthesiologists (Scientific Advisory Board), the American Thoracic Society, the International Anesthesia Research Society, the Microcirculatory Society, and the American Physiological Society (Respiratory Section). His contributions to the field extend to authoring over 60 peer-reviewed articles and approximately 40 book chapters, along with serving as a Senior Editor for the journal Anesthesia & Analgesia. He is recognized as a Key Opinion Leader for major pharmaceutical companies and provides consultancy services to medical device manufacturers.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Dull’s dedication to excellence in anesthesiology has earned him two Endowed Chairs in Anesthesiology and positioned him as a sought-after expert witness for medical malpractice claims related to surgical and anesthesia-related injuries.
Beyond his professional life, Dr. Dull finds joy in the great outdoors, particularly through fly fishing, which he practices with an ethos of catch and release on the Middle Provo River in Utah. He enjoys hiking and fishing in the mountains of Arizona, Utah, Idaho, and Montana, where he reconnects with nature and finds inspiration.
