Get to know MIS General Surgeon Dr. Ivy N. Haskins, who serves patients in Omaha, Nebraska.

A highly trained general surgeon, Dr. Haskins is affiliated with Nebraska Medicine, serving patients at their Bariatrics Center at University Tower, and at the General Surgery Clinic at Lauritzen Outpatient Center in Omaha. Her areas of clinical interest include minimally invasive bariatric surgery, esophageal & gastrointestinal surgical disease, complex hernia repair & reconstruction, benign biliary disease, and enteral access.

“I think that surgery is unique in the sense that we have the ability to diagnose a patient with a problem and fix it, or at least significantly improve a patient’s quality of life related to that problem, through an operation. In terms of the operations that most interest me- bariatric, foregut, and hernia surgery- these patients are so debilitated by their specific disease process and to see how much they improve after surgery is so rewarding and fulfilling and has really reinforced to me that I chose the right subspecialty within the field of general surgery” expressed Dr. Haskins.

She graduated with her medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine in 2012, and completed a research fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 2017. She completed her residency in general surgery at the George Washington University School of Medicine in 2019, and her fellowship in advanced minimally invasive surgery and bariatric surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2020.

With an unwavering commitment to her specialty, Dr. Haskins is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Active in academia, Dr. Haskins serves as an Assistant Professor within the Department of Surgery at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care.

On a more personal note, Dr. Haskins is a twin. She quotes her grandma at any opportunity that she has, and is scared of rollercoasters.
